WordPress sites hacked – not !!!!!

So, here I was on a lazy Sunday afternoon catching on some reading and my eye caught this headline..

“Active malware campaign uses thousands of WordPress sites to infect visitors”

YIKES!!!

Wordpress Malware graphic

Boy, was I worried when I read it

My website is a potential Typhoid Mary.

As you guys will know, this site runs the WordPress CMS and I had been updating all the core software and plugins over the last two or three weeks.

Now, having clocked up nearly 1000 page views since launching this site, I was worried that I had give the bad guys about 1000 chances to infect visitors to this site.

I rushed over to the WordPress site to see if I could find more info on the malware.

Eerrr… I found nothing, nada, zip.

Huh? (remember that Ignobel Prize winner?)

What’s goin’ on?

Hm, I thinks to meself.

This is serious, mum. (OK OK OK that’s the name of an Australian cult band TISM which I may write about one day but then if you knew TISM like I knew TISM, maybe I should not)

I was puzzled why nobody was discussing this.

So, I did a bit more digging and googling.

Google seems to suggest that every now and then, announcements of this nature are made by various news portals.

A quick read of the various news articles showed a distinctive trait – they were all about some hotshot developer who has discovered something. In the parlance, we call it an infection vector.

The crux of the article is a recommendation that some piece of software can be downloaded from the uberdeveloper’s site (sometimes for a fee) which will fix whatever malware there is which is infecting the WordPress site.

Phew!!

OK, I’ve got a handle on this now.

I HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

My website is completely up-to-date and secure because I had been following good simple housekeeping techniques, in this case, keeping everything updated.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no doubt that there are many websites out the which are infested with malware and I may write an article on website malware one day BUT for today, you can rest assured that THIS website is clean and secure.

Just the way I like it 🙂
